The Crucible - Hole #12
Par 3, 240 feet
![]() A left-to-right-to-left hole... there's not as much danger as I'd like unless you miss the first gap. |
Hole 12 is a short, uphill par 3. It's very much a righty hole, even though I've had several people accuse me of it being a lefty hole. I enjoy that very much, although I admit it confuses me... Anyway, it's a tight righty anhyzer with a roc or a putter. It's a left to right to left hole, which makes it very tough on lefties (but that's ok since it's a lefty course, right?). I've also seen people throw thumbers on it.
Ok, I don't have my nice numbers sheet I made last time I did this (a year and a half ago), so you get a more general set of numbers... these numbers are for 2003 and 2004.

![]() Here's a shot of the green. You can't tell much, I guess, but it's reasonably narrow. Where the photographer is standing is the neck of the hole, which is to say to my right is much wider than just ahead of me (me being the photographer, if you couldn't guess). So |
This hole is one of the more limiting on the course, I think, as far as style of shot thrown. You'll get the occasional thumber, but mainly I think it's a righty tight anhyzer with a roc or a putter. But that's ok... I wish it played a bit harder, I think. There were more birdies than bogeys in 2004, but at least it's near even (35 vs 32).
This was one of the last holes on the course to get designed. I didn't really know what to do with the long walk between 11 and what is now 13. This doesn't make it a lot shorter (about 240 feet, right?), but it helps a bit. And I think that's one reason I like this hole so much, it's just a filler hole but it turned out pretty good.
