The Crucible - Hole #13
Par 4, 595 feet
![]() The tee is just through that guy's head (in fact you can see the arm of somebody throwing). The landing area is at that far top right corner of the picture where you can see it start to go uphill. An ideal shot lands at the mouth of that hill. |
Hole 13 is the first of a pair of par 4's on the upper pasture, across the lake from the rest of the course. It plays out from the house in the shade of a nice, big ol' tree (I feel like I should say it's an oak, but I'm not sure it is), down and back up a valley, to a tightening entry to the green. You have to make a clear choice between going left to right or right to left on your drive.
Where you land your tee shot is crucial. You want to be far enough left to have a look up at the green, and you want to be long enough that you're not shooting way uphill. But longer you throw your drive the tighter your angle into the green. So you have to make the choice between possibly not having a reasonable upshot or having to deal with a large elevation change.
The green is a long, mounded thing that falls off to the left and rear and has bushes on the entire perimeter (but they're much the worst on the right). To the left of the green is an old dirt driveway and past that is the property line... which, unfortunately, is OB. Bleech.
Ok, I don't have my nice numbers sheet I made last time I did this (a year and a half ago), so you get a more general set of numbers... these numbers are for 2003 and 2004.

I hated this hole originally. The green was much shorter and tighter to the right than it is now. Now I like this hole very much. Every time I play it I remember this one perfect drive I had. As far as you could get up in the gap without doing something freaky. And I shanked the upshot so bad that I bogeyed. It still annoys me.
There's an old stone wall before the approach to the green that I think could look great if some work was put into it.
