The Crucible - Hole #6
Par 5, 830 feet

This is taken from the #6's tee pad. Those are the trees you're throwing the anhyzer over or that's the gap you're throwing the flat hyzer through.

Hole #6 is the other par 5 on the course, it plays from a field, through (or over) a line of trees, and then downhill to a ravine. We play over the ravine and into the woods for about 250 feet. Then we make our putt. The choices on the drive are pretty much either throw the anhyzer over the trees or the flat hyzer through the gap in the trees.

Once you're in the woods there is an OB fence to the right (OB sucks but it's a property line and whatcha gonna do?) (oh, and it is an electrified fence, so think twice before going for your OB disc. Thing is, though, that if you're over that fence it means you threw a seriously bad shot somewhere). That would have been a one sentence paragraph but it didn't feel like it because of the asides.

Ryan Renz throws into the gaping maw of the woods from about the perfect landing spot.

This hole had more work put into it than any other hole on the course and I finally mainly like it, I think. I wish the entry to the woods wasn't so tight (originally there was a second fairway into the woods planned on the left, and it's mainly there, but the line of play didn't work out like I thought it would and we didn't finish it). I expected more eagles than we got, but I'm pleased that we had one. Sonny Ashby eagled it during the second round.

We had 2 pros birdie the hole 3 times (Ryan Renz and Phil Arthur) and we had 2 ams birdie the hole 3 times (Jesse Yingling and Michael Fussner)! Heh, I guess that means 6 of the 11 birdies by the ams were by 2 guys.

Anyway, the big sticking point on this hole in the past was getting the fairway in the woods wide enough to be consistently hittable and getting that first gap open enough to make throwing through it attractive. I think we got that done. It's very important to be to the right as you get towards the woods, but I think I'm happy with that.

I looked for a decent picture of the green but couldn't find one. The closest were from last year's tournament, which is ok because it gives me a chance to remind the world of Ryan's hair last year.

From the team tournament in 2002, really this is only here because of the hair, but he is throwing in the general direction of the green.
