The Crucible - Hole #7
Par 3, 300 feet

Hole #7 is straight downhill 300 feet. There is a ravine with a creek in the bottom about 30 feet short of the basket. There's a small gully past and to the right of the basket, but it's not really an issue.

A very simple shot, it plays more like 150 than 300. It's a soft putter shot (though I bet more people throw a roc) and is all about accuracy. There's no picture up here because I really only have one reasonable picture of the hole and it's so tall that it doesn't fit well up here (since there's not that much to say about this hole).

Brad Hammock drives on #7. You could probably guess that this was hole 7 from the context, but I thought I'd let you know anyway.

I was a little bit surprised at how easy this hole played for our pros. It's not that the ratio of birdies to pars is horrible, more that there were only 3 bogeys and nothing worse. I expected that on hole #5 (where there was only 1 bogey) but not here. I guess it's because we cleared so much of the undergrowth out. I'm not sure. Anyway, the fairway is goodly sized and I used to be the only person I know who missed this hole every time, but now I've got a better handle on it and even I can birdie it. The key is not trying to throw the damn thing like a drive.

Note that our Pro Woman outplayed all the other divisions by a significant amount on this hole. In fact, there were 3 people in the tournament to birdie this hole 3 rounds, one was Courtney (our Pro Woman), one was Rooty Callihan (Masters) and one was Woody Blackwell (Masters). Rock on! No pro men. Very cool. Oh, and it seems that Rooty bogeyed it his other round while Courtney and Woody parred it, which means Courtney and Woody tied for first on this hole. Wild.

So of note to our players was the bridge that Michael Sperow built across the creek. It turned out to be more important that I thought it would since it rained all week before the tournament and a good part of Saturday. A damn fine bridge for which I still haven't received a bill.

Anyway, this hole played just a little bit easier than I want so I'm going to move the tee back about 40 feet. There are 2 good spots that keep the line of the hole intact, but the one that's more like 90 feet back I think changes the hole too much to the point that you say, "Whoa!" when you step up to the tee. I don't want that. I like it looking like (and being, really) a very makeable shot if you throw it right. I think the slight adjustment will do well in that it shouldn't hurt a really good shot but will make an ok shot less likely to make it across the creek.
